about

I thought of a line from an Ani DiFranco song a lot while I was creating this album:

People used to make records,
as in the record of an event,
the event of people playing music
in a room

Over the last few albums I've moved further and further toward looking at all aspects of a song's creation as recordings of events... that are then, in one way or another, layered up to form the "final" version. For all of these songs there was a specific sequence of layering:

1. I started either from one of Jason's guitar-based music beds, or I created my own music bed.
2. Listening to that, I wrote lyrics.
3. While I might practice running through the lyrics with the music, this process was mostly just to form some muscle memory around saying all the words, which then would allow me to improvise the performance and recording of the lyrics in one take.
4. Then recording layers and layers of other instruments, real-time manipulation of various multi-effects, volumes, pans, etc.

Both Jason and my friend MiKelly have been on me to be more mindful of bass... which, unlike guitar, piano and voice... is an instrument I've never played in acoustic form.

The lyric writing on this album was an improvised/organic process that left me to suss out any meaning that might be in the lyrics as a listener much more than as an author. But it seems mostly like reflections on death and division... and the implausibility of either.

Just walked
On a long slab of concrete

Thinking about the similarities
And differences
Between me and a squirrel
